What Is AC Refrigerant Superheat and Why Does It Matter?

What Is Refrigerant Superheat?

Inside an air conditioner, refrigerant changes between liquid and vapor as it moves through the system. At the evaporator coil, refrigerant absorbs heat from indoor air and boils into a vapor. Once the refrigerant has completely evaporated, additional heat raises the temperature of the vapor. That additional temperature is referred to as superheat.

For example, if the refrigerant’s saturation temperature is 40°F and the measured refrigerant temperature is 50°F, the superheat is 10°F.

Technicians use specialized gauges and temperature measurements to determine this value.

Why Is Superheat Important in an AC System?

Superheat helps technicians understand what is happening inside the evaporator and refrigerant circuit. An unusual superheat reading can indicate that the system is not receiving or evaporating refrigerant as expected.

A properly operating system should have operating conditions within an appropriate range for its design. If superheat is significantly higher or lower than expected, further diagnosis may be necessary.

Superheat can help technicians investigate issues such as:

  • Incorrect refrigerant charge
  • Restricted refrigerant flow
  • Problems with the metering device
  • Insufficient airflow
  • Evaporator coil problems
  • Refrigerant leaks

What Can High Superheat Mean?

Higher-than-expected superheat can occur when the evaporator is not receiving enough refrigerant or when the refrigerant is absorbing more heat than expected.

One possible cause is low refrigerant charge. A leak somewhere in the system can allow refrigerant to escape, reducing the amount available to circulate.

However, high superheat does not automatically mean the system needs refrigerant. Other problems, including restricted refrigerant flow or inadequate system conditions, can produce similar symptoms.

That is why adding refrigerant without identifying the underlying problem may not provide a lasting solution.

What Can Low Superheat Mean?

Low superheat can indicate that refrigerant is leaving the evaporator before it has been adequately converted into vapor. Depending on the system and operating conditions, this can potentially allow liquid refrigerant to move farther through the system than intended.

Potential causes can include an improperly operating metering device, excessive refrigerant flow, or other system-related problems.

Liquid refrigerant entering the compressor can be harmful because compressors are designed primarily to compress vapor, not liquid.

How Does Airflow Affect Superheat?

Airflow and refrigerant performance are closely connected.

The evaporator coil needs a consistent supply of warm indoor air to transfer heat into the refrigerant. If airflow is restricted because of a severely clogged filter, dirty evaporator coil, blocked return, damaged ductwork, or blower-related problem, the amount of heat reaching the evaporator can change.

This is one reason technicians should evaluate both the refrigerant circuit and airflow conditions instead of automatically assuming a refrigerant problem is responsible for poor cooling.
